Project Overview
John worked within the Rail Systems delivery function of a major UK infrastructure programme, with responsibilities across a portfolio of specialist railway systems contracts. The role developed from commercial management and pre-contract readiness into administration of Project Manager obligations under NEC contracts, providing commercial support and decision-making across the Rail Systems portfolio.
Challenges
The role involved administering multiple technically complex contracts within a major infrastructure programme. Contractual decisions needed to take account of the client’s wider commercial, programme, technical and strategic objectives. This required consistent contract administration across different delivery teams while maintaining appropriate commercial governance and demonstrating value for money.
Contribution
John was accountable for administering Project Manager obligations under the NEC contracts, including risk management, assessment of compensation events, contract payments and performance mechanisms, together with supporting the review of programme submissions. The role also included commercial advice to support decision-making and practical improvements to contract administration, including a bespoke application-for-payment template for use across the portfolio and training workshops for colleagues and new starters. The work drew on both NEC knowledge and wider commercial experience so that decisions were considered beyond the individual contractual process.
Results
The appointment continued into post-contract delivery and, over a 12-month period, included supporting the management of more than £35m of change. Practical tools, templates and protocols improved the consistency of contract administration across the portfolio and helped make the contracts easier for both client and contractor teams to operate. Client feedback recognised improved understanding of the contracts and the contribution to avoiding disputes, while the wider appointment extended to approximately four years.
