Project Overview
John worked as a Managing Consultant on the Terminal 3, Concourse 2 development at Dubai International Airport, a major international aviation project delivered under the FIDIC Red Book. The construction formed part of a multi-billion-dollar airport expansion. The role sat within the employer-side team reviewing claims arising from construction of the concourse, including reinforced concrete, interior fit-out, cladding and other major work packages.
Challenges
The employer was reviewing approximately $600m of prolongation, acceleration, mitigation and disruption claims. John initially formed part of a team of around 25 consultants undertaking independent assessments of quantum and entitlement across numerous heads of claim. A key issue was establishing what the contemporary project records demonstrated and whether the contractor had complied with the contractual notice requirements.
Contribution
Based in the employer’s site offices, John investigated the project records and prepared factual reports covering major construction packages. The role included assessing compliance with contractual notice provisions, contributing to quantum and risk reports and supporting assessment of the employer’s potential financial exposure. John also helped establish document-management arrangements with the instructing solicitors for the substantial volume of material generated by the dispute.
Results
The appointment continued for nearly two years and included secondment to the instructing solicitor’s office, reflecting the value of the support provided. Peer-review input helped the wider team meet its required delivery date while maintaining the expected standard of analysis across a substantial claims review.
